The Line Divides After David

Why Two Different Genealogies?

Matthew and Luke record different genealogies for Jesus. The widely held explanation is that Matthew traces the legal/royal line through Joseph, making Jesus the legal heir to David's throne, while Luke traces the biological line through Mary, making Jesus a physical descendant of David. In Jewish culture, a genealogy could be listed under the husband's name even when tracing the wife's lineage. Luke 3:23 carefully notes that Jesus was "the son, so it was thought, of Joseph."

Both lines converge at David and earlier at Abraham, confirming that Jesus fulfilled the messianic prophecies requiring the Messiah to be both a son of Abraham (Genesis 22:18) and a son of David (2 Samuel 7:12-16).
